The Daily Show and the Scottish referendum

An encounter between comedian Jon Stewart and Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, underlined both the global appeal of The Daily Show and the performance skills that contributed to the success of the Scottish Nationalist Party in the British general election. This success prompted a jibe from Stewart who, commenting on the fact that the SNP won 56 of 59 Scottish parliamentary seats, asked: ‘You think you’re Saddam Hussein?’ He also joked about Scotland’s oil reserves and asked ‘May we invade you?’ Sturgeon replied: ‘I think this is progress because you just heard Jon there, presumably on behalf of the United States, ask permission to invade an oil-producing country. It doesn’t usually work that way.’
